Fact and Fiction about the Emerald Ash Borer: what you need to know.
Fiction: if a tree is infected with the borer the only solution is removal.
Fact: If the tree has suffered less than 40% loss of its canopy, the tree can be successfully treated with our injection system and Treeage. We have done this successfully on numerous trees.
Fiction: What I buy in the store will work on any size tree.
Fact: If you read the label correctly it says up to what size tree the treatment will be effective on.
Fiction: I will have to treat the tree every year for the next hundred years.
Fact: The larvae stage of the borer can only feed in actively growing trees. Once the tree is dead or has active insecticide in it, the bug runs out of food and will go somewhere else.
Fiction: All insecticides are the same.
Fact: Based on university studies, some insecticides are more effective than others and may have a longer residual in the tree than others. Read the report from 2009: http://emeraldashborer.info/files/Multistate_EAB_Insecticide_Fact_Sheet.pdf. Note that some insecticides have different rates based on the size and health of the tree and its proximity to an infested area. We have been successfully treating preventatively and curatively for 2 years.
Most importantly, if your provider will be injecting the trees any injection sites must be at the base of the tree, just above where the roots extend toward the soil. Manufacturers give specific directions for how to apply their product. You should ask the provider to show you the label if you have any doubts or concerns. Make sure they apply what they say they are going to apply. Some pesticides have restricted use labels, meaning special precautions must be taken and special reports must be done whenever they are used.
